General Motors CAMI Assembly Plant

Ingersoll, Ontario

Equipment & Infrastructure Removal by Delsan-AIM

Project Overview

Delsan-AIM completed the CAMI Assembly Plant demolition at

General Motors’ Ingersoll, Ontario facility
. This major industrial project prepared the site for a future paint shop.
With 24/7 shifts and up to 50 workers at peak, Delsan-AIM coordinated closely with contractors and subtrades to maintain precision and schedule.

Scope of Work at the CAMI Facility

The selective demolition covered about 188,000 square feet. Key elements of the project included:

  • Preserving essential structural framing and plant systems.
  • Protecting live operational areas during all phases.
  • Removing outdated components including ovens, booths, conveyors, and mezzanines.
  • Cleaning underground pits and removing 25 roof stacks, some over 75 feet tall.

Planning and Preparation for Safe Demolition

Prior to site work, Delsan-AIM set up secured areas with fencing, trailers, laydown zones, and scrap staging. This ensured a clear separation between active production areas and demolition activities.

Demolition Methods and Equipment

Both mechanical and selective techniques were used to meet the project’s needs:

  • Mechanical: Excavators, loaders, and forklifts managed bulk removal and debris cleanup.
  • Selective: Elevated work platforms and specialized tools enabled controlled dismantling of sensitive components.

Stack Removal Strategy

To safely dismantle 25 steel stacks, Delsan-AIM deployed a 500-ton crane with a luffing jib. One particularly complex stack—265 feet from the building edge—required a custom lift plan and precise coordination.

Recycling and Material Handling

Scrap and demolition debris were sorted and transported to certified recycling and disposal sites. A fleet of five roll-off trucks ensured continuous hauling from the work zone to the laydown area.

Project Delivery and Results

Thanks to detailed planning, modern equipment, and a safety-first culture, Delsan-AIM completed the CAMI Assembly Plant demolition on time and without incident—paving the way for GM’s new infrastructure investment.
