Decommissioning and Demolition of the London Psychiatric Hospital
Project Overview
The London Psychiatric Hospital demolition involved the decommissioning and removal of eight buildings spanning more than 130,000 square feet. We carefully managed hazardous materials, ensured environmental compliance, and prioritized the sustainable reuse of site materials.
Hazard Abatement and Environmental Safety
Our team removed hazardous substances such as asbestos, PCBs, lead-based paint, and mercury equipment under strict regulatory supervision. Additionally, we began demolition with the selective extraction of non-structural elements like interior finishes, ductwork, and piping to enable safe recycling and waste separation.
Sustainable Waste Handling and Material Recovery
We crushed roughly 36,000 tons of concrete on-site for use in future development. Moreover, we transported recyclable and non-recyclable debris to certified processing facilities. As a result, the project achieved reduced landfill use and improved environmental outcomes.
Heritage Structure Retention Within Demolition Scope
The demolition project also included specific heritage conservation efforts. According to Ontario Heritage Trust guidelines:
- The Barn: Underwent lead abatement and was fully preserved.
- The Infirmary Building: Retained intact aside from unsafe structural components.
Final Results and Redevelopment Readiness
We completed the hospital site decommissioning safely, meeting all environmental and heritage obligations. The cleared land now provides a responsible foundation for future use while acknowledging the site’s historic value.
