Mirabel Airport
MIRABEL, QC
Complete Decommissioning and Dismantlement of the Mirabel Airport
Project Overview
The Mirabel Airport demolition was managed by Delsan-AIM under contract with Aéroports de Montréal (ADM). Located north of Montréal, the project involved complete decommissioning and dismantling of all remaining infrastructure at the former international airport site. Acting as the general contractor, we coordinated with multiple trades to disconnect, relocate, and cap all electrical, mechanical, and communication services.
Scope of Work
The demolition targeted two major structures:
- Terminal Building: A five-level steel and reinforced concrete building with a 348,000 ft² footprint, standing 75 feet tall.
- Parking Garage: A three-level concrete structure with a 332,000 ft² footprint.
Decommissioning involved extensive hazardous material abatement, including the removal of:
- 6,800 tonnes of asbestos-containing materials
- PCBs from light ballasts
- Mercury-containing fluorescent tubes
- Residual oils and ozone-depleting substances
Execution and Technical Approach
A team of approximately 100 workers performed abatement activities using a combination of mechanical and manual techniques. High-risk protocols were followed to ensure worker safety while operating across multiple floors of both buildings.
Structural Demolition
After decommissioning, large excavators outfitted with shears, pulverizers, hammers, magnets, and grapples dismantled the terminal and garage. A high-reach excavator enabled safe demolition of the taller terminal sections during the Mirabel Airport demolition.
Material Processing and On-Site Recycling
Crews processed over 135,000 tonnes of concrete on-site using mobile crushing equipment. Debris management efforts resulted in more than 55,000 tonnes of material being transported off-site, while stockpiled aggregates were retained for future use by the property owner.
Project Completion and Results
The Mirabel Airport demolition concluded safely and on schedule. Our team addressed technical and logistical challenges, including dust suppression and debris control near active manufacturing facilities and runways. The project stands as a strong example of large-scale, environmentally responsible demolition.
