Complete Decommissioning and Demolition of the Oakville Trafalgar Hospital

Project Overview

The Oakville Trafalgar Hospital demolition was carried out under contract with the Town of Oakville. The project involved decommissioning and dismantling the former hospital complex, including a main five-storey building and an adjacent three-storey office structure. Its location near residential areas required careful planning and execution to protect the public and comply with all local regulations.

Scope of Work

The hospital, built in the 1940s and expanded over several decades, covered 41,810 m², including a multi-level basement. The office building added 1,860 m². Both featured concrete structural systems and various exterior wall types, including brick, terracotta, and glazing. A 48-meter-tall steel-lined brick chimney was also included in the scope.

Preparation and Abatement

Before beginning demolition, we secured permits, disconnected utilities, and initiated an eight-month hazardous material abatement program. Materials removed included asbestos, ozone-depleting substances, PCBs, and radioactive elements from architectural and mechanical systems. Soil and groundwater remediation addressed localized contamination issues.

Environmental Monitoring and Community Protection

An environmental consultant conducted pre-construction surveys on nearby properties. Vibration, dust, and noise levels were continuously monitored. All recorded values remained within the limits defined by the Town of Oakville throughout the Oakville Trafalgar Hospital demolition.

Demolition Strategy and Equipment

Crews used large excavators with attachments like hydraulic hammers and shears for structural demolition. A high-reach excavator, capable of extending 28 meters, handled taller sections. For the chimney, mechanical control-drop methods ensured its safe removal in a predefined direction. Engineers developed detailed plans to protect workers and surrounding buildings.

Concrete Processing and On-Site Reuse

We crushed all concrete debris on-site using a mobile crusher. The recycled material was used to backfill below-grade areas and compacted according to contract specifications. This sustainable approach minimized hauling and landfill use.

Project Completion

The Oakville Trafalgar Hospital demolition concluded safely and on schedule. Regulatory compliance, environmental responsibility, and strong communication with the community defined the project’s success, paving the way for redevelopment of the cleared site.
