Decommissioning and Demolition of the Shell Sarnia Manufacturing Centre Polypropylene Plant
Shell Sarnia Demolition – Project Overview
The Shell Sarnia demolition project involved the safe and efficient dismantling of a polypropylene production facility. Delsan-AIM led a two-phase operation that combined decommissioning, hazardous material abatement, and engineered demolition strategies. As a result, the project was completed safely and on schedule.
Site Preparation and Decommissioning
The site was located near active pipe racks, rail lines, and internal roadways. It also featured operational warehouses and auxiliary buildings. During the initial decommissioning phase, Shell isolated, purged, and cleaned the process systems, including tanks and pipelines. They disconnected and air-gapped all feed, product, and utility lines from nearby structures to prevent hazards.
Before initiating the Shell Sarnia demolition, Delsan-AIM conducted thorough site inspections and confirmed all disconnections. This step ensured a secure and compliant start to the demolition phase.
Demolition Operations
Delsan-AIM managed the final decommissioning activities, which included the removal of asbestos and other hazardous materials. Our demolition crews used large mechanical excavators with specialized attachments to take down major structures. In cases where standard methods were not possible, we employed controlled mechanical drops and crane-assisted sectioning. Therefore, all operations aligned with strict engineered safety procedures.
Environmental Responsibility and Waste Management
We prioritized sustainability throughout the Shell Sarnia demolition project. Demolition debris was sorted and sent to certified recycling and disposal facilities. In addition, concrete rubble was crushed and reused directly on-site. These efforts significantly reduced the project’s environmental impact.
