Former Paper Mill – Grand Falls

Project Overview

Delsan-AIM completed the Grand Falls demolition at the former paper mill site on behalf of the

Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Located along the Exploits River in Grand Falls–Windsor, the site required the safe removal of hazardous materials and outdated infrastructure. Crews worked with precision to avoid disrupting the nearby hydroelectric generating facility.

Scope of Work in the Grand Falls Demolition

This large-scale project involved:

• Abating and safely disposing of asbestos, PCBs, residual oils, and mercury-containing devices.
• Recovering and marketing high-value assets such as eight refiners and a Fuji King Debarker.

Demolition Equipment and Execution

Delsan-AIM utilized advanced machinery, including high-reach demolition excavators and specialized attachments. For complex structures like the 175-foot water tower and 220-foot brick stack, we used engineered controlled-drop methods. A remote-controlled mini-excavator suspended by crane was employed to dismantle the brick stack safely from above.

Material Recovery and Sustainability

Environmental responsibility was central to the Grand Falls demolition. Concrete was crushed and reused for backfill and grading, while approximately 25,000 tons of scrap metal were processed and transported to certified recycling facilities.

Safe Delivery and Environmental Compliance

The Grand Falls demolition was completed on schedule, without incident, and in full compliance with environmental standards. The project demonstrated Delsan-AIM’s leadership in site remediation, asset recovery, and sustainable decommissioning practices.
