Xstrata Kidd Metallurgical Site

Timmins, Ontario

Decommissioning and Demolition of the Xstrata Kidd Metallurgical Site

Project Overview

In 2011, Delsan-AIM was contracted by Xstrata Copper Canada
to lead the Kidd Metallurgical Site demolition in Timmins, Ontario. This large-scale project was completed under a tight client deadline and involved one of the region’s most complex industrial dismantling efforts.

Scope and Major Facilities

The 108,000 m² site featured 35 industrial buildings, including:

  • A copper smelter and refinery
  • A zinc refinery
  • A cadmium plant
  • An indium plant
  • Two acid plants

Hazardous Material Abatement

Our team started by safely removing all asbestos-containing materials and regulated hazardous substances. This ensured environmental compliance and a secure foundation for the next phases of work.

Demolition Operations and Equipment

We used high-reach excavators and specialized tools—including shears, magnets, grapples, and pulverizers—to dismantle all buildings to grade. For structures beyond reach, such as the copper smelter, we executed engineered control-drop procedures to bring them down safely.

Project Coordination with Ongoing Operations

Because nearby roads and railways remained active, our demolition strategy accounted for Xstrata’s continuous operations. We mobilized a skilled workforce and a full fleet of heavy equipment to meet deadlines without causing any disruptions.

Recycling and Environmental Responsibility

The Kidd Metallurgical Site demolition produced more than 58,000 tons of recyclable ferrous and non-ferrous scrap. All materials were processed on-site and transported by rail and truck to certified AIM recycling facilities.

Project Completion and Outcomes

Through careful planning, strong project management, and environmentally conscious methods, we completed the Kidd Metallurgical Site demolition safely and on time. This project showcases Delsan-AIM’s capability to manage complex industrial decommissioning with precision and efficiency.
